Lech Walesa received a pacemaker in the United States

Lech Walesa received a pacemaker, announcing doctors at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, where the former president had entered Polish Monday, complaining of chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath.

"It was very, very well tolerated the procedure. It is in a good mood. He joked with awakening from anesthesia," said Dr. Guillermo Torre, a cardiologist from Walesa.

A stent was placed Thursday to widen the coronary artery of Walesa, 64.

Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 1983 for his role in the creation of independent trade union Solidarity that would lead to the fall of communism in Poland, Walesa was interrupted a lecture tour in Mexico to come to Houston.

It could leave the hospital Sunday or Monday, but it should continue to submit to examinations in the following days.

He should be able to return to Mexico at the end of next week, said Dr. Torre.

Doctors explain that Walesa suffers from cardiomyopathy, a weakness of the heart which may require futures bypass or a heart transplant, but they try to avoid it.

Walesa also suffers from diabetes, high cholesterol and sleep apnea and doctors have prescribed medication and treatments for each of these diseases, "said Torre.
