Germany: opening of the trial of a doctor charged with the deaths of eight patients There are 2 days HANOVER, Germany - The trial of a German woman doctor accused of having killed eight cancer patients with overdoses of morphine was opened Thursday in Hanover. Mechthild Bach, 58, is accused of having administered doses of drugs to patients between 2002 and 2003. She refused to speak at the opening of the hearing, but had denied the charges in an interview given earlier to a newspaper. Several of his former patients demonstrated outside the court, demanding that the charges against the doctor to be lifted. Ms. Bach had been deprived of his licence to practise medicine in 2004 after an investigation into the death of 76 of his patients. She had worked for 20 years at the Paracelsus Clinic near Hanover.
